FAQ

Who is it for?

LLC is supporting the learning of home-educating families in Leeds. Our children are aged 6-10, and we welcome children of these ages or older (but not younger  than 4 due to our ratios). This is a parent-led initiative and parents are expected to volunteer regularly and be part of the project’s management. If you are never free to volunteer or never want to leave your kids with others, this is probably not the right setting for you. Read more about our educational approach to see if what we do is a good fit for your family.

How much does it cost?

We aim to be as affordable as possible. Our sessions are £15-£17 for 5 hours sessions. We ask people to pay a month in advance, and this payment is non-refundable. This is essential to maintain our financial stability. Taster sessions are £15. We offer a 10% sibling discount.

Is it an alternative school?

This is not a school. We are operating for a limited amount of time with parents volunteering at different locations, to lead the day for our home-educated children.

Are you OFSTED registered?

No.

What about formal learning?

Our sessions are not planned around the state curriculum and do not offer formal learning in core subjects. We do offer a range of learning opportunities including art and craft, nature and biology, reading books, listening to stories, singing, speaking and listening and so much more.

Where are you based?

We are based in Leeds, and currently operating in the Meanwood and Kirkstall areas.

What is your educational approach?

LLC is an unschooling initiative. Our sessions are child-led with invitations from facilitators to engage in activities, that are often inspired by the changes of the seasons. We trust our children to choose what they do during sessions. The adult’s role is to support their learning socially, intellectually, physically, creatively, emotionally and spiritually.

Some things we do not do: punish or reward, mark and grade, compete, set rigid learning outcomes, follow a national  curriculum; force certain subjects or activities; enable violence or antisocial behaviour.

My child is 3 years old, can I join?

No, our type of activities and adult : child ratio mean we can only accommodate children over 4 years old.

Can I come for a one off / once in a while?

Unfortunately not, we are building a community so joining regularly is really important. Of course you can choose not to come on any given day but this will compromise the group's cohesion and your experience. Even if you decide not to attend, payment is collected monthly so you will still be paying for days you missed. We ask members to give us a month notice before leaving.

Are you DBS checked?

Yes, we ask our parent volunteers to show a DBS check before they start volunteering.
